"If This Then That" is a Cool Automation Website

I played around a little with the "If This Then That" website and found it to be pretty useful.  It's a great start for quickly setting up rules to automate our electronic lives.

As a start to test it, I quickly setup two "recipes"

  1. Check the weather for rain and text me a friendly reminder to put rain-ex on my car.
  2. Text me a reminder to take out the trash at the appropriate time.
The actions are not limited to text messages mind you, you can automate posting something on twitter or facebook, instagram, dropbox, ext.

The next thing they need to is to keep expanding the options.  The number of triggers and actions seems a little limited, but I'm a developer so I'm used to being able to do almost anything.  Since the site is for all people and not just developers, most people will probably find the options acceptable.

What I was trying to do, was to check facebook for any of my friends that have birthdays and automatically post "Happy Birthday!" on their wall.  I saw some shared recipes from other users of the system that did something similar by checking a Google calendar for their friends birthdays and post it in facebook, which might be an acceptable alternative but I prefer the fully automated solution.

Well, all these things will come eventually.  https://ifttt.com/
