I've always known that multi-tasking is inefficient for people. It's even inefficient in computers because in order to multi-task, there is a special process that must manage when all the other processes get to do their work. That special process takes up CPU resources itself, which could be used to perform actual WORK. Now in the case of computers, it's not a big deal because most of the time the CPU sits idle anyway. But for people, it's a bigger issue.
Multi-tasking may be bad for concentration, but even worse is to be forced into multi-tasking because of multiple interruptions. There is nothing more frustrating than to be focusing on something important just to get interrupted several times for seemingly insignificant things, and unable to return to the original task.
If you don't believe me there are studies to vindicate my position (see below). Studies show that multi-tasking, and being addicted to multiple inputs, such as blackberries, news, etc. can make you susceptible to unnecessary distraction, and can even make you worse at multi-tasking.
All my years of avoiding interruptions and trying to focus on a task may have paid off. I took the "Measuring Your Distractibility" test and got the highest possible score meaning I'm least likely to get distracted! Yeah for me! Is that a squirrel outside…?
